Joshua Newton

Literary Essayist

Joshua Newton is a contemplative writer of literary essays and creative nonfiction based in India. His work explores the quiet mysteries of daily life.

Over an eighteen-year career in journalism, he served as editor and writer with publications including The New Indian Express, Businessworld, Men’s Health (India Today Group), UAE Digest and Dalal Street Journal.


His reporting, essays and features have appeared in more than sixty publications across India, the United States, the United Kingdom and elsewhere, including The Times of India, The Hindu, The Indian Express, Christianity Today, Charisma, New Internationalist, Religion News Service and the Associated Press.

Joshua is the author of The Book of People, a pioneering work of Indian creative nonfiction that portrays the lives of ordinary people through literary reportage.

He has also written a fantasy thriller, The Boy on the Blue Mountain, ghostwritten six books for business leaders, published by Penguin-Random House, Harper Collins, and Rupa Publications.

His first original screenplay, Ritu, directed by national award-winning filmmaker Shyamaprasad, became one of the landmark films of Malayalam cinema.

His work has received international recognition, including the Evangelical Press Association Award (USA) for literary journalism and the Luis Valtueña International Humanitarian Photography Award (Spain), making him the first Asian recipient of both honours.
